Annual Report for 2014

Message From Our Chair and Executive Director

In 2014 Shepherd Home staff and volunteers cared for 18 individuals, ages 54-96. It was an honor to provide end of life care to these courageous women and men and to welcome their families and friends to a loving environment. We were pleased to not only provide a home setting for them but to be able to do so with no financial burden to them. Shepherd Home does not receive payment for our services, nor are we eligible to receive insurance reimbursement.

The ongoing generosity of the Penfield community and beyond has not only allowed us to provide the compassionate care for which we are known but also to maintain and improve our property. Our Memorial Walkway continues to expand as more bricks engraved with the names of deceased loved ones are added. More plantings continue to be added to our beautifully landscaped property so that our residents and their visitors can feel the peace and calmness of a garden setting.

Shepherd Home staff welcomes opportunities to educate the community about end of life issues and to provide students an opportunity to have hands on experience caring for those on hospice care. Nursing students from St. John Fisher College as well as those from the hospice classes at The Harley School have been assisting our nurses and volunteers as they care for our residents. Shepherd Home was also featured in an article in the magazine, Mindful (February 2014) as well as in the award winning documentary film, Beginning with the End.

After over 12 years of service to our SH ministry, Chan Philbrick stepped down as Chairperson on December 31. Chan helped oversee the planning and building of the home as well as making invaluable contributions to its success since we welcomed our first resident in November of 2005. We are fortunate that Lizz Ortolani  LMSW has assumed the role of SH Board Chairperson after serving as a board member for the last two years.

Aaron Olden, MD, FACP has assumed the role of Medical Advisor. Dr. Olden is Medical Director for Lifetime Care and Hospice. We appreciate the several years that Lisa Vargish MD served as our Medical Advisor.

Shepherd Home continues its partnership with Rochester Area Community Foundation, allowing donors to be forever associated with the good work of Shepherd Home.

As we look back on the blessings of 2014, we are pleased and humbled to be anticipating the celebration of our 10th Anniversary in November, 2015.
